The shop where I bought this CD is next to the post office. The man whose party I went to is a composer. I've broken the vase which you presented me. That's the only rock group whose music I like. Musicians who are really successful work hard.

Exercise 2. Fill in the gaps with that, which, who, whom, whose, where. Put in brackets those which can be omitted. Translate the sentences. Relative clauses can refer to both the object and the subject. In the latter case, especially if the pronouns are omitted, difficulties may arise when translating from English. Do the exercise below and practice! A. Relative clauses as an object. 1. I like the song which Jane sang yesterday. 2. This is the boy whose bicycle Tom borrowed. 3. The job which I applied for is in Manchester. 2. The hotel where I stayed during the summer was excellent. 3. The photo which I liked was taken in England. 4. The man who I met was Andrew Manson. 5. The boy whose dog was lost was very unhappy. 6. The people whom I got acquainted were all very pleasant. 7. The picture which hangs on the wall was painted by my sister. 8. The money which was in my pocket has been stolen.

Exercise 3. Insert relative pronouns where necessary. My uncle works for a company that makes cars. The book is about the man who made wonderful things. It seems that the Earth is the only planet where life exists. Have you found the notebook which you lost? What was the name of the man whose wife had been taken to the hospital? Is there a shop near here where I can buy bread? The reason why I am phoning you is to invite you to the party. She gave me the money, which I put in my pocket.

Exercise 4. Combine the sentences using relative pronouns. 1. He is the man who lives next door. 2. This is the picture which you presented to me last month. 3. These are the gloves which I found on the train. 4. I met two actors who we watched on TV show last night. 5. This is the house which my father built many years ago. 6. The person who took the lost wallet to the police station got a reward. 7. Where is the letter which I put on the table? 8. This is the picture which I took on holidays.

Exercise 5. Combine the sentences using relative pronouns. 1. This is the house where I was born. 2. That is the woman who gave you the book. 3. That is the book which the woman gave you. 4. Where is the shop where you bought the book? 5. Is that the man who owns the shop? 6. Is that the woman who married the man who owns the shop where I bought the book?

Exercise 6. There are 11 mistakes in this text. Find and correct them. The town where I was born has changed greatly over the last fifty years. Now there is a modern shopping center in the place where my school used to be and all the children who went there have grown up and moved away.
